Islamist group says it is launching investigation to discover who is
behind 'despicable crime.' Al-Mayadeen: Kamal Ranaja served as aide to
top Hamas man killed in Dubai in 2010
A senior Hamas operative has been assassinated in his Damascus apartment, the Islamist terror group announced Wednesday evening. According to a statement by a member of Hamas' politburo, the organization did not know who was responsible for the death of Kamal Ranaja, known as Nizzar Abu-Mujhad, but was launching an investigation to discover who is behind the "despicable crime." .There was no word about the manner in which Ranaja met his death. No Hamas official has yet pointed a finger at any third party, such as Israel or the Assad regime..However, shortly after his death was announced, the new pan-Arabic television station Al-Mayadeen reported that he used to serve as aide to Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, a senior Hamas member who took part in several terror attacks and was also involved in kidnapping and killing IDF soldiers. Canada denies arrest in Dubai
assassination case
Thu Oct 21, 2010 6:08pm EDT VANCOUVER (Reuters) - Canada has made no arrests in connection with the January assassination of a Hamas militant in Dubai, despite the claims of a senior police official there, the federal safety minister said on Thursday.Vic Toews said the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the national police force, told him they had made no arrest in connection with the case, and no other law enforcement agency could have done it without making the news public."We don't have secret prisons in Canada, so if somebody was arrested they would have had to go before a court," Toews told Reuters at an event near Vancouver on the government's plans to toughen the country's immigration laws.Dubai's police chief, Dahi Khalfan Tamim, said on Tuesday that Canada had made an arrest in connection with the killing of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, and complained that Canadian authorities were refusing to provide any details.Assassins killed Mahmoud al-Mabhouh in his Dubai hotel room in a hit widely blamed on Israeli intelligence agents. The large-scale operation involved a ring of suspects who wore disguises and held passports from countries including Britain, France, Germany, and Australia.A suspected Israeli agent was detained in Poland in August and handed over to Germany, which freed him on bail. The man was suspected of fraudulently obtaining a German passport believed to have been used by a member of the hit squad.Dubai police accused Israel in February of being behind the hit, a claim echoed by some other governments and which was followed by the expulsion of some Israeli diplomats in several countries. Israel, citing an "ambiguity" policy in intelligence activities, has refused to confirm or deny the allegations.(Reuters Canada) |

Presstv.ir - Israeli spy chief
'to step down' Sat, 26 Jun 2010 05:25:27 GMT
Israeli spy chief Meir Dagan will reportedly step down in three months time after facing international criticism over the assassination of a Hamas commander in Dubai.According to a report by Israel's Channel 2 news on Friday, Dagan made a request to maintain his position at Mossad for another year but Israeli officials rejected his appeal.Meanwhile, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has refused to comment on the report.Dagan was appointed by former Israeli Premier Ariel Sharon as head of the Israeli spy agency, Mossad, eight years ago. His term was extended twice by former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. In June 2009, Netanyahu decided to keep Dagan in his post as the Mossad chief for another year. The resignation report comes as Dagan came under fierce international criticism after the January assassination of a senior Hamas commander, Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, in a Dubai hotel room. The Dubai police have implicated Israeli agents in the killing, releasing extensive footage which shows the allegedly Mossad-linked assassins used forged foreign passports. Dubai Police Chief Dahi Khalfan Tamim had warned that Dagan and Netanyahu "will head the list [of international arrest warrants] if it is proven that Mossad is behind the murder." Meanwhile, European investigators took a step further to prove Mossad's role in the controversial killing by arresting a Mossad agent, Uri Brodsky, in Poland on June 4. Brodsky is believed to be one of the spy agency's key fixers in Europe who obtained a false German passport for at least one of the assassins. (Presstv.ir) |

LYON, France – INTERPOL is to join a Dubai-based international task
force investigating the murder of Palestinian national and Hamas official
Mahmoud al-Mabhouh on 19 January 2010. At the request of UAE/Dubai authorities,
the world police body has also issued a further 16 Red Notices to assist
in the arrest of additional suspects now linked to the murder of Al-Mabhouh,
bringing the total to 27.The creation of the task force and the publication
of the new Red Notices came as investigative information provided by the
authorities in Dubai bore out the international links and broad scope of
the number of people involved, as well as the role of two ‘teams’ of individuals
identified by the Dubai police as being linked to Al-Mabhouh’s murder.
According to the Dubai police investigation, the first team consisted of
a smaller core group alleged to have carried out the killing, while a second
team, the members of which are now also subject of Red Notices, is believed
to have aided and abetted the first team by closely watching, following
and reporting Al Mabhouh's movements from the moment he landed at Dubai
airport until his murder on 19 January. INTERPOL Secretary General Ronald
K. Noble said that the ‘thorough’ investigation by Dubai police had established
‘clear’ links through passport records and video surveillance of individuals
and groups, as well as through DNA analysis, witness interviews and hotel,
credit card, phone and transport records.Dubai police have also agreed
to enter into INTERPOL's international databases all relevant evidence
related to the investigation, including DNA profiles recovered from the
scene.
“Sharing all existing available information with INTERPOL and the international law enforcement community is all the more important when the case reportedly involves multiple cross-border movements worldwide and the use of fraudulently altered passports by individuals using aliases,” said Secretary General Noble.“Evidence of these global links touching each of INTERPOL’s four regions worldwide makes the creation of the international task force with INTERPOL and interested countries whose passports were fraudulently altered essential to the investigation. It can only further help connect the dots and shed light on Al-Mabhouh’s murder and ultimately bring those responsible to justice,” added the head of the world policing body. The latest publication of the Red Notices came at the request of Dubai police and INTERPOL’s National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abu Dhabi, with whom the INTERPOL General Secretariat headquarters and Command and Co-ordination Centre in Lyon are working closely, together with NCBs in other member countries, to determine the true identities of the alleged perpetrators behind Mahmoud al-Mabhouh’s murder. A former officer with Israel's National Fraud Unit who worked closely with Interpol, deputy commander Boaz Guttman, predicted the Australian Federal Police team had "zero chance" of making any significant progress in its inquiry into the misuse of the passports of three Australians who now live in Israel.Mr Guttman said Dubai police did not have serious evidence that could be presented to a court. |
